Kilclooney Judo Club hosts National competition

Kilclooney Judo Club held its fifth annual challenge recently. It was an intense weekend of competition and coaching at the Dolmen Centre, Portnoo attended by judo clubs from Dublin, Leixlip, Derry and Donegal.

Albert Kyles coach of the Kilclooney Club was very pleased with the turn out from around the country.

“I am delighted that so many clubs have travelled to Donegal to take part in our annual competition and give the Kilclooney members a taste of competitive judo,” said Albert

The competition was held on Saturday. Over 30 participants took part in eight different classes.

On Sunday Judo Ireland hosted an open training session. This was an opportunity for local young judo enthusiasts to be coached by Albert and two other visiting black belts.

“We have three black belts here in Kilclooney this weekend. It’s a great opportunity for club members to benefit from their expert coaching,” he said.

The interclub challenge was a Judo Ireland event hosted by Kilclooney Judo Club and Downstrands Family Resource Centre. Kate Morgan Co-ordinator of the Family Resource Centre said: “The Judo Club continues to be a popular activity with young people. We have over 20 attending weekly classes on a Wednesday evening at the Dolmen Centre. If anyone else would like to join they would be very welcome.”

Kate also talked about the dedication of Albert Kyles the ‘Sensei’.

“Albert has really in4spired a whole group of young people over the last few years to pursue the sport and whether they only come for a couple of terms or stick with it over a number years the young people learn so much about self- discipline, self-defence and they really grow in confidence.”

If anyone would like to put their name down for the new term please call Downstrands Family Resource Centre (074) 9545879. Children have to be eight years of age. The senior class on Wednesday evening is now open to adults who wish to reconnect with the sport.
