New figures from The National Construction Index also show that the number of house commencements in the county fell by 27 per cent compared to the same period in 2011.

From January to August this year 863 planning applications were submitted in Donegal compared to 733 in 2011. The planning application figures make Donegal one of the best performing counties on the index.

The number of commencement notices issued in Donegal fell from 246 in the first six months of 2011.

Nationally in the first eight months of the year a total of 9,197 individual projects applied for planning permission compared to 10,953 in 2011 - a 16% drop.

There was a 10 per cent fall in project commencements which dropped from 4215 in 2011 to 3782 in 2012.
