The Burtonport Action Group is holding a fundraiser tomorrow to support improvement efforts for the coastal village.
The group is planning an evening of two parts, staged beneath a marquee on the Burtonport pier. But if the weather doesn’t cooperate, the events will be moved indoors to venues near the pier.
From 6.30 to 8.30 pm tomorrow, Oct. 7th, there will be family-oriented entertainment, including a dance troupe, Irish traditional music and possibly a theatre group. Admission to that part of the evening will be free, but organisers will carry buckets for donations and there will also be a raffle.
Later, at about 9 pm, a young local band will play under the marquee and later still, at about 10 pm, Mad Dog McRea and friends will perform. There will be an admission fee for the evening concert.
Frank Green of Keadue, secretary of the action group, said the idea behind the fundraiser was to provide a range of entertainment that would appeal to as many people as possible.
“We really want to be inclusive to the whole community,” he said.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to get moving on local improvements. “We’ve got a schedule of things that we need to do,” Frank said. For example, he said, early amenities could include benches for the port area, flower boxes, rubbish bins and paint for some of the pier-side buildings.
“This is the start of something,” he said. He quoted the words of action group member Mario Cafolla, who said the aim of the group is “to bring life and colour back to the port”.
