Work on radiotherapy unit to begin within weeks
The new radiotherapy unit at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry which will open in 2016.
Work is to begin in the coming weeks on the site of the new cross border radiotherapy unit at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry which will be used by 400 patients a year from Donegal after it opens in 2016.
Cancer survivors from Donegal welcomed the project at an information evening at Letterkenny General Hospital on Tuesday night.
One cancer survivor from Donegal who had to travel out of the north west for cancer treatment, John Day, said his “heart was bursting with pride” at the coming of the unit.
The radiotherapy unit is being funded by the governments on both sides of the border with the contribution from the government in the Republic capped at 19m euro.
The unit will provide the service to more than 500,000 people stretching from north Antrim to Fermanagh in the North and from Inishowen to Pettigo in Donegal.
The new unit will create up to 220 new positions across a range of health disciplines and the Republic’s government will contribute to the annual funding based on the number of patients from the Republic accessing the service.
