Daniel O'Donnell and the reigning Mary From Dungloe share a laugh onstage at the Dome in Kincasslagh during last year's Donegal Shores Festival.

This year’s Mary from Dungloe Festival, which opens this Saturday, July 28 and continues right through to Monday, August 6, boasts a fantastic programme chock full of craic agus ceol for people of all ages and tastes.

With 45 years’ experience behind them, the organisers have once again delivered a festival that offers plenty of variety - from the glamour of the Competition itself and the Crowning Cabaret on Sunday, August 5 to the best of music from Altan, Ryan Sheridan and so many more, not to mention all the outdoor activities and competitions for all ages and abilities, as well as the Family Fun Days and La Gaelach celebration of all things Irish.

It’s Emma McGarvey’s first year as festival director and she’s very happy at what the hard-working committee has put together. “This year, as in every year, we really wanted to ensure that families are involved in as many activities as possible. When you look at the programme, I think you’ll agree there are so many events, and such a variety, that even the most dedicated couch potato will find the festival very difficult to resist!”

There are ten Marys this year, from as near to home as Lettermacaward and Buncrana to as far afield as New York and Philadelphia.

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome all our 2012 Marys to Dungloe,” Emma said. “We hope they have a wonderful time, make great friends and will take away fond memories of Donegal this summer.

“We warmly welcome back our reigning Mary from Dungloe, Debbie Rodgers from Burtonport, who has been a fantastic ambassador for the festival, for Dungloe and for County Donegal.”

The committee also welcome their returning funding bodies Donegal County Council and Fáilte Ireland, sponsor Randox Laboratories Ltd, the local traders, McGurks Funfair, Rosses CDP and Ionad Teampall Chróine and those who work hard throughout the world to promote the festival and select Marys to represent them at the festival each year.

This year’s organisers have a simple message who travel west this summer: “Enjoy the programme of events and please encourage your family and friends to come along!”
