‘We’re being snubbed’ - Joint Policing Chairman criticises lack of support from government

The chairperson of Donegal’s Joint Policing Committee said he is “furious” with the lack of support for Donegal policing, citing the reluctance of Justice Minister Alan Shatter to meet with the committee as a recent example.
Fianna Fáil Cllr. Patrick McGowan said the minister declined the JPC’s most recent request for a meeting in a letter received just before Christmas.
“I am and have been frustrated at the lack of support for the JPC since it began, and I have no doubt that the ongoing cuts to gardaí numbers will be concentrated on rural areas first,” Cllr. McGowan said. He also confirmed that he will step down as chairperson at the next JPC meeting.
The councillor spoke in the wake of widespread shock at the weekend attack on a 96-year-old Buncrana woman, named locally as Margaret “Greta” Lilly, who had been asleep at her Aghilly home when a masked attacker entered through a kitchen window. The intruder gagged and punched the Buncrana pensioner before taking money and bank cards. She was admitted to Letterkenny General Hospital, though her injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
