Top speakers for Mental Health Conference

Some of the top speakers and experts in mental health will attend a conference in Sligo on Thursday next, 13th. September which will focus on mindfulness in ourselves and others in the workplace.

Kathleen Lynch, T.D., Minister of State with responsibility for Older People, Equality and Mental Health, will officially open the Mental Health Nurse Managers Ireland annual conference in the Clarion Hotel, Sligo on Thursday, 13th September.

Denis O’Brien, Assistant Director of Nursing, HSE Sligo, and one of the organizers of the conference, says; “Leadership in Nursing is a constant challenge. Today more than ever we need to cultivate the discipline of mindfulness in ourselves and others, to be able to respond to the challenges of the work environment in a resilient and resonant manner.

“The theme for the day will explore how we can develop and practice mindfulness in ourselves and others in the workplace, by building our capacity as Nurse Managers, raising our level of emotional intelligence, increasing our resilience and improving our relationships.”

Some of the Keynote speakers will include Ruby Wax who is best known for her TV documentaries and interviews. She was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for 5 years and has been script editor for various shows including “Absolutely Fabulous”. Previously she studied psychology at the University of Berkeley, California and obtained a Diploma in Psychotherapy and counselling from Regent’s College, London.

Ruby has just launched a website called www.blackdogtribe.com which helps sufferers to get help, information, communicate with each other and to break the stigma. Ruby also facilitates leadership groups to improve communication skills as well as coaching and advising individual executives.

Shane Martin who is a Psychologist who specialises in self help psychology and believes that psychology has a vital role to play in preventing illness as well as treating it, in highlighting strengths as well as identifying weaknesses and fostering the positive traits in people. His Moodwatchers Self-Help Psychology course has been delivered in community venues throughout Ireland. He has visited hundreds of schools nationwide promoting health and happiness.

Other experts in the field including Dr. Tony Bates, Professor Mary Jo Kreitzer and Michael Chaskalson will also deliver keynote addresses at the conference.
