Top magician has roots in Ballyshannon

One of the top magicians in the world has his roots back in the equally magic town of Ballyshannon and joins ex-British Prime Minister Tony Blair in the list of famous people who can trace their lineage back to the Erne.

On the Turbidy Show yesterday, John O'Connell of the Atlantic Aparthotel and Eclipse Cinemas showed the broadcaster a photograph of Bundoran taken circa 1902.

John said, "The photograph was taken at the back of the old Methodist Church in the centre of the town. It was given to me by local businessman Emmett Travers, who collects old photographs of Bundoran.

"It has since transpired that the owners of the 'Electric Cinema' in the picture came from Ballyshannon and were the grandparents of well-known Paul Daniels.

"Mike Denver has now informed me that he is a Ballyshannon man.

"No doubt he will be telling us all next that he met the Galway Girl along the banks of the Erne."
