Three men charged with intent to commit burglary

Court news from the Donegal Democrat.

Court news from the Donegal Democrat.

Three men were in Ballyshannon District Court today charged with being in possession of items with the intention to use them in the course of a burglary.

Det. Sgt. Barry Doyle told the court that, at around 5pm yesterday, gardai responded to a report of suspicious activity near a house at Drumbeigh, Mountcharles.

While responding, they came across a car. On searching it, they discovered the following items: a hand syphon pump, bolt cutters, vice grip, two pairs of oil resistant gloves and a large screwdriver.

Charlie Sweeney (18), with an address at the Halting Site Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon and Martin Ward (19) of Drumacoo, Ballaghaderreen, who were both passengers in the car, were remanded on bail. They are due to appear at Ballyshannon District Court again on March 1.

Gardai objected to bail, however, for the driver of the car, Charlie Ward (19) of 1 Glenview Park, Ash Lane, Sligo.

The court heard in addition to the charge of intent to commit burglary in Mountcharles, he was charged with the theft of copper wire worth €3,700 from the Eircom Yard, Donegal Town on November 22 last.

Defence solicitor Gerry McGovern asked for bail, saying that his client was due to be married next week.

Det. Sgt. Barry Doyle said the defendant had mentioned this while being questioned. “I asked him where the wedding was and he told me Enniskillen but he could not name the exact location.”

Judge Alan Mitchell refused bail. He said he based his decision on the nature and degree of seriousness of the alleged offences and the seriousness of the penalty to be imposed in the event of conviction.

He remanded the defendant in custody to appear at Harristown District Court next Friday.
