'The best week of my life' - Donegal Rose Escort

by Sue Doherty

When Sean O’Shea of Pettigo learned that his brother had put his name down as a potential Escort for the Rose of Tralee Festival, he was not amused. But Sean, who works with Dunleavy and Barry Solicitors in Donegal town, says he’s completely changed his tune.

“It was the best week of my life. My brother, unbeknownst to me, entered my name, as a bit of a joke, I think. Initially I wasn’t too impressed. But know I have to say,’Kudos to him. I had a great time. After my experience, I would tell anyone to have a go, either as a Rose or as an Escort.

“It would be impossible not to have a great time at the Rose of Tralee Festival. You meet 31 escorts who become your friends for life and 32 Roses, who are all very beautiful, intellligent and capable women. The whole week is packed out with a huge range of activities from early in the morning to, well, early in the morning, and you are treated like a mini-celebrity.

“Your main duty for the week as an Escort is to accompany your Rose to all the functions. Of course, it’s all about the Roses and I was highly impressed with them all, the gracious way that they dealt with such a demanding schedule. My Rose, Veronica Hunt, is a genuine lady. As the Kerry Rose, she had quite a few extra duties and she handled them all beautiful. She’s very professional and very sincere, a wonderful combination.

“This year’s winner, London Rose Clare Kambamettu, is also absolutely lovely. I’m sure she will do the tiara proud.”

Sean thanked the Mill Park and Abbey Hotels in Donegal town for their sponsorship, which he says was very much appreicated.

He also praised the festival organisers, who all work on a voluntary basis, for their efficiency and professionalism. “The whole festival is incredibly well run, it’s really admirable and a credit to them.

“I would absolutely encourage anyone to go ahead and put their name forward as either a Rose or an Escort. There are huge numbers going forward in all of the Munster counties, but not so many up here, which is unbelievable, really, when I look back on all the fun I had.”
