Tesco gets go ahead for filling station
An Board Pleanála had granted planning permission to UK retail giant Tesco to build a filling station at its store at the Letterkenny Shopping Centre on the town’s Port Road.
Concerns had been raised that the development at one of the busiest roundabouts in the town would create safety issues for traffic.
A previous application by Tesco to develop a filling station at the site was turned down by An Bord Pleanála on safety grounds.
The proposed development includes the provisions of a one-way entry and one-way exit system via the existing car park access road, the widening of the existing access road to a two-lane access road, and the closing of a number of existing car parking entrances to improve queuing distances.
The decision by Letterkenny Town Council to grant planning permission had been appealed by businessman Eddie Tobin, who runs a nearby filling station, and Paul Sweeney, who runs a local convenience store.
Mr. Tobin highlighted concerns that the development would lead to confusing turning movements at the entrance from Station Roundabout and create the potential for accidents. In his appeal Mr. Sweeney said the junction serving the shopping centre is dangerous for traffic and pedestrians.
An Bord Pleanála concluded that the application is consistent with the policy of the local development plan. It said the application dealt with issues around traffic safety raised in the previous application.
The board found that, with compliance to ten conditions, the application would not seriously injure the amenities of the area and would be acceptable in terms of traffic safety and convenience.
