ST PATRICK’S DAY TRAGEDY - Norwegian fisherman dies after suspected slip at Killybegs pier

The body of a fisherman was found on a pier in Killybegs in the early hours of St Patrick’s Day.

It is believed the dead man was from Norway, and that he was a married man with children.

Gardaí do not suspect foul play but are investigating. A post-mortem was conducted at Letterkenny General Hospital yesterday.

It is believed the man was returning to a ship when he slipped and fell. He was understood to have been in Killybegs for a few days before the tragic accident occurred.

In an unrelated incident, Arranmore Lifeboat was called out on St. Patrick’s Day to assist a crabber that had lost power about 40 miles north west of the island. The five crew members on board the 15-metre vessel were in no immediate danger, but ropes had became caught in the propeller and the boat lost power.

The RNLI crew at Arranmore received the call at about 1.45pm yesterday and arrived at the stalled crabber at about 4.30 pm.

With swells up up to five metres, it took more than five hours to tow the boat back to Burtonport.
