St Patrick’s Day - no records set but great spirit

Leprechauns filled Glenties on Sunday and Patricks and Patricias flocked to Ballybofey and Stranorlar, and while neither effort set a record, organisers said the communities deserve great credit for the way they supported the events.
There were nearly 600 leprechauns in Glenties, wearing costumes that local volunteers made in the lead-up to the village’s second record-breaking attempt; last year they hosted 1,024 leprechauns.
“We have the most fantastic committee -- I couldn’t praise them enough,” said Bernie Keeney. Speaking Sunday evening she said, “It was an absolutely brilliant day in the town and people are still having a great time.”
“It’s about getting people back into your town and supporting your own local people,” she said.
Kathy Taaffe, chairperson of the Twin Towns Gathering committee, said they had registered 626 Patricias and Patricks on Sunday but saw they would not reach 1,100 and break the record. There were more than 100 other namesakes waiting to get into the Finn Valley Centre when organisers invited everyone in for a cuppa.
Ballybofey and Stranorlar also held their first St. Patrick’s Day parade in years, all in carnival style -- no lorries, cars or jeeps allowed. “It was a great day for Ballybofey and Stranorlar,” Kathy said.
“We had a brilliant crowd in the town and that’s what it was about,” said Cllr. Patrick McGowan, committee member.
