The cream of the county’s sports people came together in the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny on Friday night for the 37th Donegal Sports Star of the Year awards ceremony.

The event has grown into the biggest annual gathering of Donegal’s most successful sporting teams and individuals. This year the overall award winner was Donegal senior footballer, Karl Lacey, and the Four Masters club man accepted the accolade on behalf of the entire Donegal team

Special guest at the function, which was attended by around 600 people, was Billy Walsh, head coach of the Irish Amateur Boxing’s Association’s High Performance Team, which enjoyed a hugely successful summer at the London Olympics last year.

The speculation as to who would be named 2012 Donegal Sports Star came to an end shortly before 1am, when Karl Lacey was announced as the overall winner.
