Smoke free campus to be launched at LGH
With the imminent launch of a Smoke Free Campus at Letterkenny General Hospital, Elaine Robinson, Smoking Cessation Officer, LGH, offers some startling facts and figures about the dangers of smoking, and outlines why it’s always the healthy option to quit.
Every 6.5 seconds someone in the world dies from using tobacco - 1.5 million people die in the prime of their life each year, losing approximately 22 years of life. In Ireland, tobacco use is the leading cause of avoidable death; 5,500 people die and thousands are left suffering with tobacco-related illnesses every year.
The immediate and serious health problems include respiratory and non-respiratory effects, addiction to nicotine, and the associated risk of other drug dependence. Tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke are causes of heart disease, strokes, chronic lung disease, and cancers of the lung, mouth, pharynx, oesophagus, and bladder. The earlier you start using tobacco, and the longer you use tobacco, the higher your risk of suffering a tobacco-related illness.
