‘Sleep out’ volunteers sought for Simon week

The North West Simon community is urgently recruiting 25 brave volunteers (over 18yrs) to participate in their annual charity ‘Street Sleep’ in Letterkenny, on Friday October 5.

Last year’s event proved a huge success with volunteers braving the elements to spend the night out on Letterkenny’s Market Square with just sleeping backs and cardboard boxes used for mattresses.

The annual ‘Street Sleep’ is being run in conjunction with Simon Week which is taking place from October 1 to 7.

To help raise political ‘Simon Week Political briefing’ in relation to issues within the Donegal constituencies will take place on Thursday, October 4 in The AV Room, Leinster House, Kildare Street, Dublin 2. Local politicians are encouraged to drop in to the briefing at any stage between 11am and 2pm.

Coffee mornings are being held at various venues throughout the county- Mon 1st- Fri 5th Clanree Hotel, Letterkenny, Weds 3rd Sodexo Catering at LYIT all day, Weds 3rd Donegal Family Resource Centre from 11am -12pm, Thurs 4th Mountain Top Restaurant, Letterkenny from 9am – 12pm, Sat 6th Foody’s Deli, Donegal town all day

On Thursday 4th October at the new Dunnes Stores Letterkenny, bagpack by Simon volunteers, Sat 6th Centra Mountain, Letterkenny car wash by Simon volunteers. Annual Street sleep takes place Friday October 5 at Market Square from 10pm.

So far 43 people have been housed permanently in Letterkenny by North West Simon Community. In 2011 through there tenancy sustainment programme they prevented homelessness for 40 people and their families in counties Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo. Already in 2012 this figure has risen to 75.
