Shaun Duffy inquest set for this month

The inquest into murdered Dungloe man Shaun Duffy is to take place later this month, more than five and a half years after his violent death.

Mr. Duffy’s body was found in the front living room of his home at Meenacross, three miles from Dungloe, on January 29, 2005.

The 36-year-old business man had been shot with a cross-bow bolt and struck on the back of the head. He was murdered after he returned home from a family party in Maghery.

The inquest is to be held in Letterkenny Court House on September 22, following an adjournment by coroner John Cannon last April.

The coroner has indicated that the inquest may run over two days. The state pathologist is among the witnesses listed to attend.

This month’s inquest is taking place after garda sought a date for the hearing.

The murder was the first in a generation in west Donegal, and despite one of the biggest criminal investigations the county has seen, no charges have ever been brought in connection with the murder.

At one stage up to 50 garda were working on the murder probe, in which over 1,000 people have been interviewed and 800 statements taken.

The investigation is still open.

Duffy, who was well-known in the area, worked as an undertaker and traded in horses and ponies. He also worked as a part time doorman in the Dungloe area. His murder, and the violence involved, shocked the local community.

Garda believe at least two men were involved in the attack and may have been waiting for Mr. Duffy when he returned home.
