Sharks researcher condemns 'irresponsible behaviour'

A Donegal-based marine researcher has hit out at young people who filmed themselves surfing off the backs of basking sharks in Donegal and broadcast the footage on youtube.
National Parks and Wildlife Services Ranger Emmett Johnston, who is based in Inishowen, condemned the actions yesterday.
“This was very irresponsible behaviour on the part of these young people and very disappointing. Especially when you consider how much work is being done, and hugely supported by the local community, in trying to create awareness about these magnificent creatures.
“Basking sharks feed on plankton and don’t have teeth, so they are pretty harmless. Although they are generally quite docile, they are still very big, powerful creatures, up to 10m long, and must be treated with respect.
“They can cause a lot of damage to vessels or injure people if provoked. In the days when they were hunted and harpooned, there were many instances of such damage, caused as they thrashed their tails.
“Since we started the Basking Shark Survey here in Donegal, we’ve not come across any cases of this happening, but it is understandable that, if any creature feels threatened, they will lash out.
“Because of this, we advise anyone who wants to view basking sharks to proceed to about 50m distance from a shark and then put the engine into neutral. Don’t drive right on top of them.
“Basking sharks are naturally inquisitive and they will approach you.”
There have been hundreds of sightings of basking sharks in the waters off Inishowen over the last few months. Fishermen, sailors, surfers and divers have all reported seeing the huge creatures, which have, in many cases, come right up alongside them.
Emmett Johnston is currently researching basking sharks for a Masters degree and the Inishowen Basking Shark Survey is tagging sharks to learn more about them.
