Seven new members for Donegal Mart committee

Seven new members are to be co-opted on to the committee of Donegal Co-operative Livestock Mart at a special meeting next Tuesday night.

Mart Chairman William McElhinney says the move is part of an overall agreement made with disaffected shareholders to ensure the smooth running of the mart into the future.

Despite a new committee being elected at the Mart’s AGM in October, a number of shareholders who demanded an EGM in November, put forward a motion of no confidence in the commitee and called for the entire management commitee to resign en masse.

In what proved to be a narrow vote, 127 backed the committee while 118 said they had no confidence in them. Four committee members - Charlie McGinty, Frankie Deane, Gerry Mulhern and John Coburn - stepped down on the night. Three days later, the Friday mart was the subject of a boycott, with just three animals put up for auction and a handful of farmers turning out to bid. Earlier that morning, mart secretary Seamus Carbin had tendered his resignation. Two other members of the committee, vice-chairperson Siobhan McGroarty and Eamonn Brogan have also resigned.

With negotiations continuing behind the scenes, there were no further boycotts or protests and the last mart of the year went well.

Mr McElhinney says that agreement has been reached and everyone at the mart is now “pulling together”.

Todoay sees the normal Friday cattle auction taking place while a Special Weanling Sale will be held this day week, Friday, January 18.
