Seamie scores again! Bundoran's Seamie Granaghan who was voted "Dad of the Year" is presented with his prizes by Michael Saling of the Raddisson Blu in Letterkenny and Donegal Democrat Sports Editor,Peter Campbell. 1906MVBritton1 Dad of the year.JPG

He may have hung up his shooting boots a few years back, but in his heyday, Bundoran, St. Joseph’s and Donegal legend Seamie Granaghan was a match for the best.

And while picking up Ulster GAA senior championship medals in 1972 and 1974 were the highlights of a county playing career, that also saw All-Ireland club success with St Joseph’s - his proudest achievement to date had been his selection as Dad of the Year with the Donegal Democrat/DPP.

Married to wife Joan in 1971, they celebrated their 40th wedding last year and Seamie has five beautiful daughters - Julie (Belgium) Jacqueline (Belfast) Elaine (Bundoran) Lesley (Cashelard) Colleen (Kinlough) and nine adoring grand children; 5 boys and 4 girls, ranging from one year to 9 years and all adore him.

Those who know Seamie have long recognised that he was never a man for the limelight, which makes this award, all the more fitting.

He is a keen golfer and member of the Bundoran Golf Club, WAGS. He also played GAA with St Joseph’s and Bundoran for many years and holds eight senior championship medals. in 1968 he played with St. Joseph’s in the first unofficial All Ireland club final against Dunmore McHales and was a prominent county player for many years.

But there is more to this Dad as daughter Elaine recounts: “Over the last couple of years we have discovered that Dad has a passion for entertaining – Christmas night would not be the same without our annual party organised by him and which the family have now come to expect. He does a mean Tina Turner impression and won the GAA Factor organised by the local GAA club. We spent days afterwards scrubbing him clean. He is really just a big kid at heart, he recently took a credible placing in the Bundoran RNLI soapbox competition down the Astoria Road, and is already plotting his revenge for next year.

His love of horses is also well known and he was a regular on the show jumping circuit, where he competed against the legendary Eddie Macken amongst others.

Daughter Elaine who nominated her Dad says that he always brought them everywhere: “We looked a great sight with Seamie and his six ladies in tow but he has always been there for his family. A real family man who looks out for his neighbours and is always doing something active - if not for himself for somebody else.”

“Dad is a real background kind of guy, which is one of the reasons for the nomination. He is very unassuming and he is so chuffed to have received so many votes to win this competition.”

For his efforts Seamie received a family lunch at the Radisson BLU Hotel in Letterkenny and Belleek Living also kindly presented Seamie with a Tie Pin and cufflinks from their jewellery range. No doubt, these little items will be just as dear to him as any sporting success he achieved down the years. Well done, Dad of the Year!
