It was a memorable night in Teach Hiudaí Beag’s in Bunbeg on Tuesday, when the Sam Maguire Cup made an unexpected visit to the Gaeltacht pub.
Donegal full-back Neil McGee, himself a Gaoth Dobhair man, accompanied Sam to the pub.
The pub was established by Hudi Beag Gallagher, a former Gaoth Dobhair football player who was named right corner forward in the Donegal Football Team of the Millennium. Hudi played for Donegal in the 1940s and also played on the Ulster team in inter-provincial championship Railway Cup matches in Croke Park.
The three McGee brothers on the Donegal team, Neil, Eamon and Peter, hail from Dobhar, which was also the home place of Hudi Beag Gallagher.
Mrs. Kitty Hudi Beag Gallagher, her sons, Patrick and Hugh, her daughters, Sally and Bernadette, and Hudi Beag’s sisters, Mrs. Kitty McGarvey and Biddy Gallagher, wanted to express their appreciation for the way Neil honoured Hudi’s memory by bringing the Sam Maguire Cup to his pub.
