Rural group seek political support on security fears
The campaigning rural organisation , Glór na Tuaithe is challenging politicians to publicly support the sentiments expressed by Fr. Michael Cusack at the funeral of Detective Adrian Donohoe. Fr. Cusack used his homily to highlight the fear and worry among people in rural areas, including his own family, with the closure of stations.
“My parents are now living in a rural community in Galway that has no police service,” the priest said.
“It only ever had one guard but that one guard brought great security. Since he moved, two men in their 80s have had their heads bashed in, one left without hearing or taste for the rest of his life.
“In the view of Glór na Tuaithe what is happening is a direct attack on rural Ireland especially. It calls for a political response. The politicians must speak out.
“Glór na Tuaithe also encourage people to support the protest marches planned for the 9th of February. We recognise that it might be difficult for Gardaí themselves to march but we call on their wives, mothers, partners and children to do so on the day.”
