Rare Crayfish caught in Dowros bay
One lucky visiting angler caught more than he bargained for when he landed a seven and a half pound rare Crayfish off the coast of Rosbeg.
The lucky fisherman was visiting from New Zealand and was on board a local charter boat when he landed the impressive catch.
Donal McMenamin, skipper of the Tor Mr Charter Boat based in Rosbeg/Portnoo said it was a surprise to land such a large, rare species, especially when they were fishing for other specimens.
He said it was caught on a mackerel bait and the fish had to be to over 4” length to make it a legal catch.
“As you can see he is well over the required 4” length. It is incredibly rare to catch Cray fish in our vicinity,” Donald said.
Spiny lobster's or Cray Fish get their common name comes from the sharp spines all over their heavy, orange-brown shells.
Spiny lobster's are found near the coast and offshore to 70m deep, in bedrock.
Crayfish are no longer target fish because of their falling numbers, but are sometimes landed, as in this case, when fishing for other species.
