Rainfall figure for July doubles from last year
By Eamonn McFadden
As the forecast shows signs of some ‘Indian summer’ weather, at least for the next few days, figures confirm what we all knew, last July was almost twice as wet as July 2009.
Statistics from Met Eireann show rainfall for the late spring and early part of the summer had dropped significantly from the previous year, the rain clouds returned with a vengeance in July.
May and June had almost half the amount of rainfall with 51mm and 24mm compared to 95mm and 47mm for 2009.
This changed drastically in July with rainfall rising to 128mm this year compared to 72mm last year.
The latest figures available for August indicate it hasn’t quite been the same wash out as last year. In 2009 170mm was recorded and this year to date the Met Eireann stats show 66.9mm was measured.
Met Eireann’s Noreen Brennan said much of the weather this year so far was “average” with a few exceptions.
Speaking of the rainfall she stated: “It was very high for July but the others were almost average rainfall but then June was very low. May was average and most months were average but July was away above average.”
There was almost no change in the average temperatures in both years.
For the next few days there will be some fine settled weather with chilly nights and with clear spells.
