Public consultation on N56 project starts tonight

The public consultation process on the proposed upgrading of the N56 from Dungloe to Glenties begins tonight in Dungloe.

Sinn Fin Cllr. Marie-Therese Gallagher has welcomed the consultation.

"I would encourage anybody who has an interest in this proposed project to attend," she said.

The public consultations sessions take place from 4 to 8 pm this evening, in the Dungloe Public Service Centre; and from 4 to 8 pm tomorrow at the Highlands Hotel in Glenties.

The scheme being proposed is a pilot project that would result in a construction of about 27 kilometres of new national secondary road from Dungloe to the Kilraine junction south of Glenties. The scheme would also include provision of a cycle track for the length of the new construction.

The existing road is about 5.5 metres to 6 metres wide, with long stretches characterised by sharp bends, "often found in combination with sharp crests and dips", according to an analysis on the county council web site. The Meenacarn Bends (2 km) and the Gweebarra Bends (5.2 km) are part of this stretch and are described on the council web site as "particularly problematic".

The N56 links Donegal Town with Letterkenny, via Mountcharles, Dunkineely, Ardara, Glenties, An Clochan Liath, Loch an Iuir, Gaoth Dobhair, Gort a' Choirce, An Fl Carrach, Dunfanaghy, Creeslough and Kilmacrenan.

Cllr. Gallagher said that more detailed information on the project is available at the Donegal County Council web site, under the list of major roads projects listed under the roads and transportation section.
