Two very well known businesses, the Carlton Hotel in Belleek and Mary’s of Donegal and Sligo, have ceased trading.

Shutters were down at both Mary’s of Donegal and Mary’s of Sligo on Monday morning. Notes have been posted saying that the shops “had to close due to the recession” and thanking patrons for their custom over the years.

Mary’s of Donegal Town, occupied a very prominent site on The Diamond for around ten years, and was a very popular shop with locals and visitors alike.

The owners could not be contacted for comment.

The Carlton Hotel in Belleek also ceased trading yesterday.

Joint administrators John J. Cavanagh and Gerard Gildernew issued a statement today saying they had “taken the difficult decision” because it had not been possible to sell the business as a going concern over the last six months.

They business, they added, remains for sale and they are “optimistic of securing a sale/lease of the business in the coming months”.
