Presidential reception for Tom Daly and Ulster Council

President Mary McAleese hosted a special reception for Donegal man, Tom Daly and his Ulster Council colleagues at Aras an Uachtarain yesterday.

In recognising the contribution of Ballyshannon man, Tom Daly and his colleagues on the Council, the President welcomed more than 40 guests to the Aras, among them members of the Daly family, Ulster Council staff and officers.

Mr. Daly, speaking afterwards, said it was "a very special honour for

all involved in Gaelic games in Ulster."

Danny Murphy, secretary of the Ulster Council said Tom Daly had been an inspirational leader of the GAA in Ulster at an historic time for Ulster and the Association.

"History will judge the last three years as very exciting in the life of the GAA in Ulster," he said.

"We entered into a fledgling peace process that has led to devolved Government and this placed an enormous requirement on the Ulster Council in terms of interacting with government." He added: "Tom Daly led that interaction with distinction and his clear and solid thinking

was exceptional."

Mr. Murphy drew a parallel with President McAleese's work when he said: "We share the President's efforts to build bridges and we have worked very diligently in that regard.

"Tom Daly, who steps down as Ulster Council President on February 27th, has played a large part in that," he said.

Mr. Daly said it was "a special day" for himself, the members of the Council and his family. He added that the honour bestowed was indeed wonderful but he said he saw it as a shared honour for the Council.
