Post office robbed for second time in a year

The post office in St Johnston has been raided for the second time in a year.

The raid occurred at around 11am on Thursday when men entered the premises armed with baseball bats and demanded cash. They escaped with an undisclosed sum.

A number of cars are understood to have been damaged as the raiders made their escape towards Derry.

Local councillor Gerry Crawford said people in the area are shocked at another raid on the post office.

The robbery highlights the policing difficulties in the border area, he said. “It is disturbing and frightening for those involved and raises concerns for those who live in the general area. While we expect the gardaí to work to their full capacity and they are, their resources I feel are limiting their ability as regards prevention and deterrent, irrespective of the reasons for cut backs and recruitment to the gardaí.

“This must have been a very frightening experience for the staff involved and hopefully they can recover from their terrible ordeal.”
