Planning to start soon for next year's Gaoth Dobhair féile

The response to last weekend's Loinneog Lúnasa, Féile Cheoil Ghaoth Dobhair has convinced organisers to build on the fledgling music festival for next year.

"It was a nice start to what we hope will be an annual event," said Cathal Gallchir, manager of Comharchumann Forbartha Ghaoth Dobhair and a member of the festival committee. "The plan is to start as early as possible this year, and within the coming weeks to sit down and work on building for next year."

This year's event was organised by the recently formed Gaoth Dobhair Tourist and Traders Committee and Comharchumann Forbartha Ghaoth Dobhair, though Cathal said that as they develop plans for next year's file they will also be looking for "anyone we can bring from the community to make it bigger and better."

The weekend festival was designed to focus on the musical tradition of the area and the musical talent there. Local businesses rallied around the event, rescheduling events to coincide with the festival or organising new ones. Events included a concert by An Crann g, the group of young Gaoth Dobhair trad musicians; a children's music performance and drumming workshops at An Chranng; cil and set dancing at Teach Jack's in Glassagh; family day activities at Ionad Naomh Pdraig in Dore; the Cabaret Craiceilte at Teach Hiuda Beag's pub; a trad session at Teach Sean g; a singers' club at An Chirt, the Gweedore Court Hotel; and a parade of marching bands along the main road.

There were also young buskers playing on Saturday in front of businesses on the main road.

"There's a real buzz about the place musically at the moment," Cathal said.
