Pest control at Magheroarty pier
The problem with rodents at Magheroarty pier should soon be resolved due to the sheer hard work and diligence of the local community and local elected representatives. Donegal County Council have asked FM Services Group to carry out an inspection of the area and produce a report outlining their recommendations to achieve a pest free environment.
To date, two visits with bait installation and monitoring have been carried out and work is ongoing. In order for the proposal to work, the area has to be kept clean and waste free and all users of the pier, harbour and carpark to combine efforts to achieve a rodent free area.
Particular care has to be taken to ensure that there is no waste food around the car park and pier area that rodents can feed on. Fishermen are being urged to store bait for lobster pots in sealed containers prior to use in order for the project to be successful.
Councillor Seamus Ó’Domhnaill said that the issue had grasped the local community. “I spent two nights with members of the community down at the pier in Magheroarty. The first night was a Friday night and we didn’t see any rats whatsoever. However, on the second night we did see two rats but they were not as big as people were saying. The rats are living in the big rocks under the car park. If there is no food left out for the rats to eat there should not be a problem. Pádraig Ó’Dochartaigh and I both raised the issue at an earlier electoral meeting and steps are now being taken to resolve the issue,” he said.
Councillor Terence Slowey said that the issue will not arise if waste is not left lying around for pests to eat. “You don’t have rats unless you have a food source, that’s what causes this type of thing. If lots of food is left out there then there will be a spike in the number of rats that you will have. People need to make sure that they do not leave food lying around,” he said.
Councillor Pádraig Ó’Dochartaigh welcomed the move by Donegal County Council to contact the FM Services Group. “The important thing is to keep the place clean. The last time I was down here there certainly wasn’t as much bottles or cans lying around,” he said.
