Sinn Féin’s finance spokesperson, Pearse Doherty TD departs for a tour of Australia today.

Deputy Doherty said that the visit is to “engage with the new diaspora, on the economic crisis, unemployment and emigration” and to promote the Sinn Féin “alternative to austerity”.

He will visit Perth, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, speaking to public meetings and engaging with local politicians, trade unionists and Irish organisations, but above all with Irish young people who have recently arrived in Australia to look for work.

“I am concerned that these young people engage with the trade union movement and look after their health and safety while working in Australia,” he said. “We want them to come back safe and well and to keep them engaged with Ireland while they are away.”

He will be promoting an online petition which calls on the Taoiseach to extend voting rights in presidential elections and all constitutional reform referenda to the Irish diaspora and citizens in the six counties.

“We are calling on Irish people to make your voice heard, demand your right to vote, sign the petition and help make a change,” said Deputy Doherty.

His itinerary is as follows:

5 to 8 September 2012: Perth, Western Australia

9 September 2012: Sydney, New South Wales

10 September 2012: Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

11 September 2012 : Melbourne, Victoria
