Pair convicted of murdering Donegal man in Glasgow
Two men, Asif Rehman (20) and Adel Ishaq (19) have been convicted of the murder of Donegal emigrant William McKeeney in Glasgow last January.
The verdict was heard at the High Court in Kilmarnock today.
Mr McKeeney, a 57 year old native of Malin Head, died as a result of injuries he sustained in the brutal assault by the two accused in the early hours of Sunday, January 15.
The court heard that Mr McKeeney was returning from a night out, had bought his fish supper, and was nearing his home when he was attacked by Rehman and Ishaq in Melville Street, Pollokshields.
The jury accepted the Crown case that the two accused attacked and killed Mr McKeeney by knocking him unconscious and then repeatedly stamping on his head and body as he lay defenceless in the road, just yards from his home.
Procurator Fiscal for the West of Scotland, John Dunn, said: “William McKeeney was an innocent man on his way home when he had the misfortune to run into Asif Rehman and Adel Ishaq. Minutes later, and in a totally brutal and unprovoked attack, he was beaten so viciously and severely that he would never recover. His murder has shocked the local community.
“Those who commit such crimes must be held accountable and I hope that today’s verdict will bring some closure for Mr McKeeney’s family, who have had to deal with the effects of this tragic event. I cannot imagine the mental anguish they have suffered because of these men.”
Detective Superintendent David Gailey of Strathclyde Police said: “William McKeeey, who was from Donegal, lived with his partner in Pollokshields. Despite only living in Glasgow for a few years, he was well known and popular in the area.
“The whole community was appalled by this crime and they united together to assist the police, helping to provide the evidence which ultimately led to the convictions. I am very grateful for the community response which was critical in taking the inquiry forward.
“Incidents such as this are very rare and the community of Pollokshields have shown that they will not tolerate such crimes within their community.”
Rehman and Ishaq, who denied the murder charge against them, face mandatory life terms. They are due to be sentenced on November 9.
