O' Muircheartaigh slams proposals in McCarthy Report

At a ceremony marking the 10th. anniversary of the founding of Gaelscoil na gCeithre Maistrí in Donegal Town last week, legendary TV broadcaster Micheal " Muircheartaigh slammed proposals in the McCarthy Report (An Bord Snip) relating to the Dept. of the Gaeltacht and the Irish language.

Muircheartaigh said, “These proposals are self-destructive both culturally and economically and if implemented could signal the end of ‘ An Gaeltacht Beo’ as we know it today.

“The Gaeltacht is not just about our native language, it is about our very culture and heritage. It is our own unique identity and a culture that differentiates us as a nation from the rest of the world.

“The Irish language has survived through many troubled times - the Penal Laws, previous Recessions and turbulent times and it would be just a short-term gain to make savings during these tough times.

“The Gaeltacht areas are unique and form the last remaining part of the Real Ireland. They have the potential to become the top tourist attractions in this country.

“Tourists travel to experience new things and not to experience things they have on their own doorsteps at home. Our Gaeltachts and our language and culture are national assets and they should be protected.

“If the disappear, like everything else, they will be hard to revive.”

Muircheartaigh was in Donegal Town to mark the 10th. Anniversary of Gaelscoil na gCeithre Maistir which tens years ago opened it’s doors in the old technical school in Donegal Town. Today the school has nearly 100 pupils and a staff of 12.

Seosamh Mac Suibhne, head master of the school told the Donegal Democrat, “Our aim is to change the social values of the community and create a bilingual environment. All our pupils speak both Irish and English.

“It really is like going to the Gaeltacht everyday.”
