O’Dowd to receive Donegal Diaspora Award

 Niall O'Dowd.

Niall O'Dowd.

The inaugural conferral of the Tip O’Neill Donegal Diaspora Award will take place on the 7th September in Buncrana.

This award will be presented to Niall O’Dowd, one of the most prominent members of the present day Irish Diaspora.

Buncrana Town Council and Donegal County Council are delighted to confirm the journalist and editor as this year’s winner.

Niall was born in Ireland and emigrated in his mid twenties to the US in June 1978. As a successful journalist and editor, he worked tirelessly for the Irish émigré in the US and played a pivotal role in the Irish Peace Process. He was the leader of an Irish American peace delegation to Northern Ireland in the early nineties, in fact former president Clinton has stated that his involvement in the Northern Ireland issue came about through his relationship with O’Dowd.

He is also founder of Irish central, a global internet website and the Irish Voice newspaper.

It is felt that Niall O’Dowd portrays the essence of this award and is an example of all that is positive about our Diaspora.

This is going to be one of a wide range of event happening this September for the first Tip O’Neill Donegal Diaspora Award. A full listing of events can be found on www.donegalgathering.com
