Gardaí in Donegal can now avail of a state of the art Mobile Command and Control Centre when dealing with major incidents.

The unit was unveiled last Thursday at Ballyshannon Garda Station. Supt. Leo McGinn, Inspector Denis Joyce and Garda Liam Feeney, who has undergone specialist training in driving and operating the unit, demonstrated its impressive features.

Inspector Joyce said: “This unit allows us to have full communications from the heart of any crime scene, even from the remotest spot. We have full access to the Garda Pulse System, which has all the crime databases from across the country.”

Garda Feeney added: “We can download footage from a rescue helicopter, for example and we also have external lights and cameras on the unit itself. It’s designed to help us deal with any major incident, from a plane crash to a missing person.”

The resource, Supt. Leo McGinn, explained is a regional one. “This unit is specifically for the North West Region and we have access to it whenever we believe the situation calls for it.

“In additional to all the communications features, the unit also provides a safe, secure, comfortable meeting space. That’s a big plus whether you’re co-ordinating an operation, or interviewing witnesses or family members of missing persons.

“We’re delighted to have such a facility available to us here in Donegal. It’s ideally suited for such a large county with so many remote areas.”

Gardai in Ballyshannon also took delivery of a brand new mobile patrol car this week.
