The Gaoth Dobhair based cancer support group, Scaoil Saor ó Ailseach has been elected to the National Networking Committee of the Irish Cancer Society’s Cancer Support Affiliation Programme for the west and north west region.

The committee, which held its inaugural meeting in the Irish Cancer Society’s offices in Dublin on December, 6 last, will guide the direction of the Society’s affiliation programme which sees it support 48 community based cancer support services across the country.

Aodán Ó Gallchóir, a member of both the national and local based committee is optimistic that the recent merge will be a fruitful and prosperous one.

He said: “The work we do at a national level will greatly benefit people at both a local level and countrywide,” he said.

“The National Networking Committee of the Irish Cancer Society has been established to encourage local support groups, they will both further their development and provide them with vital information which may improve the understanding of their illness for cancer patients.”

The main focus of the programme is to ensure the highest possible standard of practice through the delivery of its first rate training and coaching programme in local cancer support centres for cancer support services staff, volunteers and board members.

It also provides psycho-social care for cancer patients and their families by supporting professional counselling services in their own communities.

“At local level many people have come to us seeking information in relation to the signs and symptoms of cancer and we are now preparing and compiling information which will be used towards this in the near future.

“The local group was established to help people and provide them with the information that they need and people should feel that they can come to us with all their queries and questions,” he said.

Anyone who would like more information about the group can contact Aodán Ó Gallchóir at 083 3711450 or the chairman of the group, Freddie O’Donnell at 083 1217857.
