Mother's fear NI sex offenders are being exiled to Donegal village

Fears are growing that sex offenders forced out of Derry are setting up home in Donegal border villages such as Muff.

A concerned mother, speaking on behalf of other parents in the village, contacted the Democrat's sister publication, the Derry Journal yesterday to say there was an "increasing sense of concern" that people with criminal records for sex offences against children could be living freely within the Donegal village.

"I'm not a vigillante. I don't condone mob justice, but when you hear of people with such records setting up home in Muff because they have been put of Derry, you do get concerned.

"I have young children. There are reports that one such offender lives close to St. Brgid's NS, which is where my children go. I'm speaking here, as are other people, as concerned parents.

"Our first priority has to be to keep our children safe."

The woman said there should be some warning system in place so that parents in communities such as hers were warned when those with relevant criminal records were moved into the area.

A spokesperson for the Garda Siochana confirmed that Gardai are in constant contact with police north of the border and would discuss matters such as these.

Padraig MacLochlainn, Buncrana town councillor and Donegal County Council's deputy Mayor called for an All-Ireland sex offenders register which would make the monitoring of sex offenders easier.

"An all-Ireland sex offenders register would mean that anybody who is included and is in any part of the island of Ireland can be accountable to relevant parties. It would make things a lot easier."
