More than 400 banned for drink-driving in Donegal

Over four hundred disqualifications for drink driving offences were handed down in Donegal last year.

Figures released by the Courts Service show that 403 disqualifications were ordered in Donegal's main court district in 2009 which includes the court sittings at Letterkenny, Buncrana, Dungloe and Glenties and covers most of the county.

Twenty-four full prison sentences or partially suspended jail terms were handed out the county's main court district for drink driving.

Three imprisonments were suspended while two drivers were served with community service orders.

A total of 379 fines were issued. Forty-seven prosecutions for drink driving were dismissed while 60 were struck out and 22 were taken into consideration with other offences.

Another 262 disqualifications for drink driving were handed out in the neighbouring district which includes court sittings in Donegal Town and Ballyshannon but also courts in Co. Sligo and Co. Leitrim.

Seven full or partially suspended prison sentences were given out while two suspended terms were ordered. Nine community service orders were issued and a total of 250 fines were given to convicted drivers.

Cases were dismissed on 46 occasions and 29 drink driving charges were struck out. Twenty-three convictions were taken into consideration.
