McGettigan’s Butchers in Donegal town are looking forward with great excitement to this Saturday, when a delegation from Normandy will present them with the trophy for the Best Sausages in Europe.
The Commanderie des Fins Goustiers du Duché d’Alençon originally announced that McGettigans had won the award, for their maple and hickory sausages, last October.
The prestigious competition includes entries from many of the top countries renowned for their sausage making in Europe including France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and England.
Speaking to the Donegal Democrat Ernan McGettigan said, “This award is a tribute to each and everyone here involved and indeed to the high quality of food available in Donegal.
“It is a great endorsement of our own food but also greatly enhances Donegal’s reputation as a provider of great food on a much wider European stage.”
Diarmuid McGettigan added: “The Europeans put a very high value on their sausages and that is why it is particularly pleasing to see a Donegal sausage come out tops in such a prestigious competition.
“We have taken the overall European title for our Hickory and Maple sausage which was also our very first award winning sausage ten years ago.
“Apart from capturing the overall title for the best personalised sausage, we also received two rosettes for two of our other varieties and a further two trophies for our traditional curry, banana and mango sausages.
“It really is a great achievement and we are especially delighted for our father Michael, who founded the business 60 years ago.”
Michael and Ernan travelled to Normandy for the awards ceremony, at which Michael was made a Knight of the Order.
This Saturday, eight members of the association will travel to Donegal town to re-present the trophy to the McGettigans at 4pm. Diarmuid will also be made a Knight of the Order at the event, along with Dave Lang, Development Officer for the Association of Craft Butchers in Ireland, for their work in promoting artisan foods.
To add to the celebrations, McGettigans will be offering free barbeque tastings all afternoon.
