Donegal North East TD Charlie McConalogue has commended gardaí in Donegal following a number of weekend arrests and condemned an attack on gardaí in Bridgend.

The Fianna Fáil deputy commented: “Gardaí in Donegal are continuing to uphold a high standard of public service to the community despite the closure of Garda stations and a reducing strength in the force as a result of cuts being pursued by Minister Alan Shatter.

“I want to commend gardaí for the success and arrests they have had this weekend in tackling criminal activity. The ongoing series of criminal acts being committed against people and property is a cause of great concern to the public and the government’s response has been woefully inadequate.

“The ramming of a patrol car in Bridgend is particularly worrying. People will remember that two members of the force have died in the line of duty in Donegal in recent years and there can be no tolerance for attacks on gardaí.

“It is increasingly clear that the gardaí in Donegal need more support and resources, not less. Fianna Fáil proposed a new recruitment campaign for the gardaí, to open up the Garda training college and train new recruits as more gardaí are due to retire this year. Minister Alan Shatter appears to have no bottom line when it comes to the reducing numbers serving in the ranks of the force. This is extremely dangerous for the security of the state and safety our communities.”

Deputy McConalogue concluded: “The gardaí are to be commended and supported for their tireless work on behalf of the public and the government needs to recognise that the necessary political and financial back-up for the gardaí cannot be undermined further.”
