Mayor of Ballyshannon, Cllr Phonsie Travers has appealed for calm.

The Mayor of Ballyshannon has appealed for calm following the blaze at a house near the town which had been intended for a family from the Travelling Community.

Last night circa 3am, the house, bought by Donegal County council for Social Housing and valued at 230,000 euro was all but destroyed by fire.

Gardaí are treating the blaze as suspicious. Inspector Denis Joyce said the incident was “a very serious matter”. Gardaí have started an investigation and have appealed for information asking anyone who was in the Parkhill area between one and four am to contact the garda confidential line on 1800 666111 or 071-98-58530.

Mayor of Ballyshannon, Cllr. Phonsie Travers said, “This is a highly sensitive matter and the cause of the fire has not been established and is currently under investigation.

“At this stage in time I feel it would be unwise to make any comment on the situation until all the circumstances have been investigated.

“Meanwhile I would appeal for calm in regard to the whole issue.”

Speaking to the Donegal Democrat on Monday morning, Cllr. Barry O’Nell said, “No one supports the destruction of any property that goes without saying.

“I wish to point out that I raised this issue first at the last meeting of the Donegal Electoral area “The decision to purchase this house without discussion or consultation with the public representatives and the community was wrong in the first place. I said at the time that this action by the Co. Council was sending out a “bad message” and I have since brought an emergency motion on the matter to the Co. Council.

“The management of Donegal Co. Council have told us that “the purchase was under review”.I must ask the question why is it under review if they were not confident that they had made the right decision in the first place. There had to be an element of doubt.”
