Donegal Road Safety campaigner, Mary Clinton, says her calls for the introduction of a special safety speed device on all vehicles in Ireland have received a timely boost.

Ms. Clinton has long been campaigning for a special aparatus known as an ISA (Intelligent Speed Adaptation) to be fitted to cars in an effort to curb excessive speeding on our roads.

The ACEART campaigner was an invited guest at a Road Safety Authority conference which was held in Dublin Castle on Monday. Among the key speakers at the event was Professor Oliver Carsten of Leeds University who is a leading pioneer in the ISA system.

“I was delighted to be able to meet him on Monday and beforehand, I sent him on copies of the letters I have written on this subject to the Government and the Road Safety Authority and the correspondance I have received back over the years,” she said.

“This is something I have been campaigning on for six years now so as you can imagine, I was delighted to learn that Professor Carsten would be addressing the conference in Dublin.”

The ISA system has already been introduced in parts of Europe but according to Ms. Clinton, for it to be brought in to Ireland, a GPS mapping system must already be in place.

“I have been trying since to find out if there is a GPS mapping system in Donegal and if not, if there are plans to bring it in,” she said.

She added that according to Professor Carsten, it cost approximately £6m for a GPS mapping system to cover the whole of Britain. “So when you think that Donegal is the size of Manchester, it shouldn’t cost all that much,” she said.
