Man admits manslaughter, denies murder in Arranmore trial
A 41-year-old man from Arranmore Island has pleaded guilty to killing another man, but claims it was manslaughter, not murder.
Stephen Boyle, who lives at Austen House, Cambridge Road, Kilburn Park in London but has also has a home on Arranmore Island is accused of murdering Paul Boyle (19) at Early’s Bar, Leabgarrow, Arranmore on October 3, 2009.
The court heard that the two men “didn’t get on well” due to a row over money. Paul Boyle had worked for Stephen Boyle in London and believed he was owed £400.
Paul Boyle was a with a group in a pub and, after the pair had words, he moved to Early’s with his friends.
Stephen Boyle arrived there later. He approached the group holding a Heineken glass and “stabbed it into Paul Boyle’s neck”.
Peter Boyle suffered a total of four wounds to his neck and was brought to Letterkenny General Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10.20am on October 3.
The trial continues before a jury of six men and six women presided over by Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy.
