Major boost for Ballyshannon Leisure Centre

A major investment has been approved this week by Donegal County Council for the Leisure Centre in Ballyshannon which sources claim will guarantee the viability of the centre well into the future.

The Minister of State at the Department of Tourism and Transport, Michael Ring, this week approved a grant of €264,396 for the upgrading of the centre with Donegal County Council funding the balance.

The funds will be used to increase the energy efficiency at the popular Leisure Centre and will include the installation of solar panels on the south facing roof and walls as well as the construction of a new wood chip pellet boiler house.

Speaking to the Donegal Democrat, Cllr. Sean McEniff said, “This is a welcome and very essential development for the Leisure Centre - the only public centre in the south of the county. Regrettably with continually rising fuel costs the centre has been losing considerable money by factors which have been totally out of their own control.”

He added: “The installation of these energy efficient methods which we already have in operation in Waterworld in Bundoran will guarantee the viability of the centre and sustain the valuable employment that it creates. “The Leisure Centre is a great asset to Ballyshannon and attracts users from as far away as Glencolmcille and Killybegs and from across the border from areas around Belleek and Garrison. The contract is now set to go out to tender and it is hoped that the work will commence in September. One of the added bonuses is that up to 10 jobs will be created during construction, which is welcome news for Ballyshannon in the present climate.”
