Lucky escape for Creeslough family
Members of a Creeslough family were lucky to have avoided serious injury in Derry on Sunday night when vandals attacked their car as they returned from the airport .
A missile was thrown at the vehicle belonging to Roscad resident Angela McFadden, as she travelled along the Skeoge Road, between the Foyle Bridge and the Buncrana Road, smashing a side window and showering passengers with glass.
She had been collecting her brother, Eamonn McFadden, a news reporter with the Donegal Democrat, from City of Derry airport at approximately 8.30pm. As they travelled around the outskirts of the city, near the roundabout junction with Lower Gallaigh Road, an object struck the front side passenger window with major impact, shattering it immediately and covering the interior with shards of glass.
The occupants were uninjured and Ms. McFadden managed to drive away from the scene safely. They contacted the PSNI a short time later from a local shop.
The incident occurred around the same time a major security operation was taking place in the city, where an attempted mortar attack was foiled a short time earlier. They were told the police were unable to send anyone to the scene, or to inspect the damaged car due to the security incident, and police said they would investigate the matter at a later time.
Mary McFadden, who was a rear-seat passenger in her daughter’s car, said they were left very shocked and saddened by the incident and she would now consider not travelling on this stretch of road in the future.
“I’ve travelled on that road many times to get to the airport or on to Belfast, but I’ll think twice about it in the future. I don’t think I would be comfortable ever going on that road again,” she stated.
“It is a bad reflection on the city during its year as City of Culture, which is a shame as I know so many good people from Derry who come to Donegal regularly and we have very close connections between the two counties,” she added.
BBC Radio Foyle heard reports that there had been similar incidents in the area in recent days with one man claiming the body of his car was seriously damaged by what he believed was a water balloon filled with stones. They also detailed other incidents of anti-social behaviour in the area in the past, including the roadway being blocked.
