Local activists to hold vigil in defense of animals
Members of Donegal Veg, a group of local activists, will hold a vigil this weekend to mark World Day for the Abolition of Meat. The vigil will be held on Main Street in Letterkenny, across from the Market Square, from 1 to 4 pm on Saturday, January 30th.
World Day for the Abolition of Meat is intended to promote the idea of abolishing the killing of animals for food.
"Our aim on the 30th will be to reach out to the general public in Letterkenny and get them to consider their part in the death of billions of animals that are used, abused, treated as property and ultimately slaughtered for a meal," said Julia Feliz, spokesperson for Donegal Veg. She said medical authorities acknowledge that humans do not need to eat meat or animal products to live healthy lives. And she said that society should not ignore the negative environmental impact of animal agriculture, or the food that could be used to end starvation that is instead feeding livestock.
"Everyone can take a stand and do something about it," Julia said. "Each time you pick up your fork you are deciding whether to take part in that suffering or not."
Most members of Donegal Veg live in Donegal, like Julia and her husband, though there are also members from Sligo and Leitrim. The group meets every month and will also protest Donegal fur farms this coming Sunday with members of the National Animal Rights Association (NARA). Nara is also participating in Saturday's vigil.
