LGH problems filling vacancies for junior doctors

Letterkenny General Hospital is having ongoing problems recruiting junior doctors, with the number of vacancies fluctuating between eight and fourteen.

The hospital’s general manager Sean Murphy discussed the issue with the Donegal Democrat today.

He said the difficulty in getting doctors to apply for vacancies has led to the hospital launch recruiting campaigns in South Africa and advertising posts in the British and Irish medical press.

The difficulty in hiring non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs)is leading to the hospital having to recruit more agency staff. The cost of hiring agency doctors is a significant problem for the hospital with the cost of agency fees and VAT to be met by the hospital, which puts an extra burden on an already over stretched budget.
