Donegal Drama Circle promises you a laugh a minute to chase away the recession and doom ‘n gloom when they perform the hilarious classic comedy, The Odd Couple, by Neil Simon, at the Bosco Centre, Donegal Town, as part of the Donegal Bay and Blue Stacks Festival from next Monday, October 1 for three performances.

This hit Broadway play, tells the story of New York photographer Felix Ungar, (Christian Carbin) a compulsive neat freak, who is thrown out of his apartment by his wife and ends up at the apartment of his friend and poker buddy, Oscar Madison, (Conor Friery).

Oscar is a happy slob, recently divorced and living alone in a slovenly eight roomed apartment, who hosts a regular poker game with his poker crew, a rumpled bunch cut from the same cloth as Oscar, Murray (Donal Friery), Vinnie, (Sean McLoone), Speed, (Seamus McHugh) and Roy (Ryan Doherty).

Within a few weeks, Felix transforms the apartment from cigar burns and dust to bleach fumes and furniture polish. Friday night poker games, once a stag ritual, transform into something more like a tea party, after Felix sets up camp in Oscar’s apartment, and this mismatched pair are soon on the verge of mutual murder. The crunch comes when Oscar suggests a romantic interlude with neighbours, the Pigeon sisters from England, Gwendolyn (Caroline Faulkner) and Cecily (Suzanne Thomas) and instead of the romantic dinner Oscar had planned, Felix proceeds to reduce them to tears!

Directed by Amanda Crawford, with lighting by Art Kavanagh and set design by Martin Crawford, this promises to be one of the highlights of the festival, and with the Drama Circle’s reputation for quality drama productions and the talented local actors/crew involved in this play, it is sure to be an evening of welcome comic relief for the community in Donegal Town.

“The Odd Couple” John Bosco Centre, Donegal Town, Monday, October 1 to Wednesday, October 3 at 8pm sharp. Admission: €12 and €8 Seniors/Students
