Donegal centre half back Karl Lacey is the 2012 Footballer of the Year. Lacey, now a four times All Star, was named number one at Friday night’s All-Star Awards in Dublin.

He inspired Donegal to the All-Ireland title and he won the top prize ahead of team-mates Colm McFadden and Frank McGlynn.

Donegal’s Patrick McBrearty was pipped by Mayo’s Cillian O’Connor for the Young Player award - O’Connor winning for the the second year in a row - while the Hurler of the Year honour went to Kilkenny forward Henry Shefflin.

Johnny Coen of Galway collected the Young Hurler of the Year award.

A talking point was the fact that All-Ireland champions Kilkenny gained five players in the Hurling All-Stars team, one less than beaten finalists Galway.

Henry Shefflin won his 11th All Star and told RTÉ that as he got older the awards continued to be very special.

Donegal have eight players in the Football All-Stars team.

It is one short of the record haul of nine shared jointly by Dublin in 1977 and Kerry in 1981.

Tyrone’s Sean Og Grogan won the Player of the Year award in the Lory Meagher Cup.
