Judge praises Donegal's legal eagles

A Circuit Court judge has praised Donegal's legal profession for working an extra court day to help clear the county's lengthy court lists.

Speaking yesterday at Letterkenny Circuit Court, Judge John O’Hagan said he was “delighted” with the response from the local solicitors and barristers to working at the Monday sitting to help progress the week’s court lists.

He said he understood that many legal practitioners have other business to attend to at the start of each week. He further understood the Circuit Court did not normally start business until the Tuesday of each week when it sits in either Letterkenny, Donegal Town or Buncrana.

Judge O’Hagan said the lists were “chaotic” but by working the Mondays of the last two weeks, matters were “proceeding well.”

“I thank the members of the bar and I know it is difficult for them to come to court and sit on a Monday, but the list in Donegal is so chaotic, and I emphasis that word, that I had to put in Monday to achieve that,” he added.

He said it was something he would examine using in the future as it allowed the court services, staff and practitioners the opportunity to prepare cases earlier.

“Fingers crossed Buncrana will be the same,” Judge O’Hagan quipped before the end of yesterday's list call over.
